Meet Aaliya – A Bright Student with Big Dreams

Aaliya Giri, age twelve, sits still in her little rented room, Kirti Nagar, Delhi, with all her schoolbooks scattered on the ground. There is not even a study table or proper lighting, just the determination and dreams fighting against the darkness of poverty. 

Aaliya is bright and ambitious and studying in the 8th grade in a G (Co-Ed) S School. She loves going to school, her school gives her hope, happiness, and the promise of a better future. But every day, the dreams are shadowed by the harsh realities of her family's struggles against poverty.

Aaliya’s Family Struggles to Make Ends Meet

MD Sikander, Aaliya's father, has been working as a day laborer under the sun for long hours, earning an insufficient ₹9,000 per month. With four mouths to feed, rent to keep up with, and bread and butter issues staring them in the face, Aaliya's education is left with hardly anything. For 12 years, the family has been living in rental houses, constantly on the edge of financial hardships. Some days a full meal would feel like a luxury.

Aaliya’s Academic Excellence Amidst Hardships

Despite these challenges, Aaliya has forever been an outstanding student. She secured 75.2% last year, proving that she is capable of great things—if only given the opportunity. But she now lives in the fear of being unable to complete her studies. His parents want her to study, but they are unable to support her aspirations.
