A Child’s Brave Battle Against a Life-Threatening Disease

At just seven years old, little Dhirendra Bittal from Gwalior is facing a battle no child should ever have to fight. In October 2023, he was diagnosed with B-cell acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a serious and forceful form of blood cancer. Since then, his life has changed desperately. Instead of playing with his friends and going to school, he now spends his days in hospital rooms, undergoing painful treatments, and fighting a tough disease.

A Family Struggling to Cope

Dhirendra comes from a middling family of four members. His father, Nandkishore Bittal, works as a laborer and is the sole laborer, earning only Rs. 10,000 per month. His earnings, which were hardly enough to support the family’s daily needs, are now stretched beyond their limits due to the overwhelming medical expenses.

The diagnosis was a shock to the entire family. His mother, who once looked after the household with a smile, now spends her days by Dhirendra’s bedside, praying for a miracle. His father, hopeless to save his son, has taken loans and borrowed money from relatives, but it is still not enough. The cost of Dhirendra’s treatment alone is Rs. 3.6 lakh, a sum they simply cannot afford on their own.

A Painful Journey Through Treatment

Since his diagnosis, Dhirendra has been receiving treatment at AIIMS, New Delhi, under the care of Dr. Rachna Seth. His treatment includes rounds of chemotherapy, medications, and constant monitoring to ensure his weak body can fight the assertive therapy.

Each session of chemotherapy takes a toll on his small body. The side effects leave him exhausted, weak, and sometimes unable to even eat. Despite the pain, he tries to stay strong for his family. His innocent eyes, once full of dreams, now reflect a silent request for help.

The family has also had to move temporarily to Delhi for his treatment, which adds to their financial struggles. The cost of travel, food, and temporary housing in a city far from home has become an insufferable burden. The little savings they had are now gone, and they are left with nowhere to turn.

Before leukemia took over his life, Dhirendra was a cheerful and active child who loved playing cricket and dreamed of becoming a police officer. He would talk excitedly about catching bad guys and making the world a safer place. But today, his fight is against an enemy he never imagined—cancer.

His schoolbooks lie untouched at home, and his childhood is slipping away in hospital corridors. His parents long to see him run around and play again, to hear his laughter fill their home. But for that, he needs urgent medical care, and the family cannot do it alone.
